Ortho Aligners

Straight teeth not only look better, but they’re easier to keep clean and less prone to future problems, so orthodontics is more than just a cosmetic procedure. At Mountain Peak Dentistry in Lakewood, Colorado, licensed general dentist Brennan Bonati, DDS, provides discreet, pain-free orthodontic treatment to adults and teenagers using aligners. To learn more about how orthodontic aligners can improve your teeth or those of your child, call the office or schedule an appointment online today.

Your 3 most common questions about Ortho Aligners

Question 1: What are orthodontic aligners?

Aligners are an alternative to traditional metal braces that use a series of clear, custom-made, removable plastic aligners to gradually straighten your teeth. Unlike metal braces, which are very noticeable and can cause a lot of pain, aligners are nearly invisible and cause minimal discomfort.

When you wear aligners, people won’t be able to readily tell you’re wearing an orthodontic device, and you’ll be able to take out the aligners to eat and drink anything you want, rather than having to follow a restricted diet to avoid damaging your braces. You can also remove the aligners to brush and floss as normal.

Aligners can correct most of the same orthodontic problems as metal braces, including:

  1. Teeth crowding
  2. Gaps between teeth
  3. Overbites, underbites, and crossbites

You may think the problems with your teeth are too serious for aligners, but the technology has greatly improved in recent years and General Dentist Dr. Bonati determines during your consultation if aligners are right for you.

Question 2: How long will it take to see results from aligners?

The process starts with getting an impression of your teeth, which will be sent to a lab where technicians make your aligners. You’ll wear each set of aligners for a couple of weeks, based on Dr. Bonati’s recommendations, which will cause your teeth to move slowly into place. When you have the aligners, you’ll need to wear them about 22 hours a day, including when you sleep, but you can take them out to eat, drink, floss, and brush your teeth, as well as to clean them.

Generally, aligners take about a year to correct orthodontic issues, though you may only need nine months, or it could take as long as 18 months. After you finish your treatment, you’ll receive a retainer to help maintain your results. For a few months, you’ll need to wear the retainer every day, but then you’ll switch to wearing it just at night.

Question 3: Am I a good candidate for aligners?

General Dentist Dr. Bonati recommends aligners to older teenagers and adults with a wide range of dental issues. He doesn’t recommend aligners to children younger than age 14, as their teeth are still growing and they may not be mature enough to commit to wearing the aligners every day and regularly cleaning them. Though aligners can comfortably and conveniently correct most orthodontic concerns, Dr. Bonati may refer you to an orthodontist if you need treatment that’s outside what aligners can do on their own.
